SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — When Joe Thornton ran Vancouver’s Matt Cooke into the boards late in the third period, the San Jose Sharks‘ sizzling rivalry with the Canucks seemed perfectly primed for a first-round playoff sequel.

Two late goals changed both clubs’ postseason course, and it’s a pity: After this bruising regular-season finale for San Jose, only a rematch could have been more exciting than a game that decided two division titles.

Mattias Ohlund scored a power-play goal 34 seconds into overtime, and the Canucks clinched the Northwest Division title with a 4-3 victory Saturday.

Roberto Luongo made 27 saves in his 47th win for the Canucks, who also clinched the Pacific Division title for the Anaheim Ducks by ending San Jose’s five-game winning streak. The Sharks began the day two points behind Anaheim for the division crown and the No. 2 seed in next week’s playoffs — and if the Canucks had won in regulation, they might have faced San Jose.

Thornton had a goal and two assists for San Jose, assisting on Jonathan Cheechoo‘s tying goal with 32 seconds left in regulation — but last season’s MVP finished his 114-point season in the penalty box after a tripping call. Ohlund’s shot from the point glanced off Curtis Brown‘s stick and found an improbable angle into the net behind goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

But Thornton really got the Canucks’ attention with 5:06 to play when he lowered his shoulder and ran Cooke into the boards, possibly breaking his own nose in the process.

“Any time someone hits you from behind, it’s not the best,” said Cooke, who wasn’t hurt on the play. “If that’s the way he wants to play, fine. He’s 6-(foot)-5 and 210 pounds. I have no respect for him. Fair is fair, but when you see the numbers … You teach the kids not to hit (that way). You can’t have superstars out there doing that.”

Both players hit the end of the rink forcefully, and Thornton was bent over in pain as he went to the locker room. Thornton returned to the bench moments later, but couldn’t speak to reporters after the game while getting treatment on his nose.

“I think if it’s any other guy in the league, you have to call a major (penalty),” Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. “But Thornton is an All-Star player, and obviously he gets a lot of leeway, and he gets a lot of decisions going his way.”

Matt Cooke and Taylor Pyatt scored first-period goals for the Canucks, but Milan Michalek and Thornton tied it with power-play goals in the second. Kevin Bieksa scored his first goal in 15 games early in the third period for a 3-2 lead, but Cheechoo tied it while Nabokov — who made 26 saves — was pulled for an extra attacker.

Sharks coach Ron Wilson saw nothing wrong with Thornton’s aggressive play, noting the Canucks’ defensive game plan included a few questionable hits.

“We’ve got our best player playing mean, big, strong and not taking any prisoners,” Wilson said. “There’s hell to pay when Joe is running and hitting. You want to touch him, you’re going to pay a price.

“It’s not about getting back at Matt Cooke or (Alex) Burrows or any one of those little agitators. If they’re going to hit Joe and Jonathan Cheechoo, we have to hit the skill people on the other team equally as hard.”

Ohlund’s goal ended San Jose’s seven-game home winning streak and forced the Sharks to open the postseason on the road despite a franchise-record, 107-point regular season and a conference-leading 51 victories.

By earning one point, San Jose clinched the No. 5 seed in next week’s playoffs against Nashville, its first-round opponent last season. Dallas, which finishes its regular season against Chicago on Sunday, has 105 points but would lose a tiebreaker with San Jose on total victories.

“They’re a tough team with a lot of speed, a lot of skill,” Sharks defenseman Scott Hannan said. “We’ll start on the road, but we’ll do what we’ve got to do. We’ll do what it takes. That was the plan all along.”

The Canucks, who finish their regular season Sunday in Phoenix, needed just one win to hold off Minnesota for the division title. Vancouver is the only opponent to win at the Shark Tank since February, doing it twice in overtime.

Luongo is headed to his first postseason after the winningest season in history for a Canucks goalie. He broke the franchise record for wins in Vancouver’s last trip to San Jose, and this victory tied Bernie Parent’s long-standing, NHL single-season record of 47 wins — though it already was surpassed by New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur earlier in the week.

“It was one of the most intense games I’ve played all year,” Luongo said. “You could feel it in the air.”

Notes

The Sharks played without forward Bill Guerin, who sat out for the third time in four games to rest his strained groin for the playoffs. … The Sharks finished the regular season with 27 consecutive sellout crowds.

By Ted Montgomery, special to USA TODAY

Ah, predictions. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Many readers tell me that they look forward to my prognostications, and just as many chide me for those predictions that do not come to pass.

Predicting outcomes in the NHL playoffs is fraught with risk. So often in recent years we’ve seen goaltenders getting hot, star players getting cold, and injuries rearing their ugly head. In recent seasons, teams like Anaheim, Calgary, Carolina and Edmonton – teams most pundits predicted would suffer early exits from the playoffs – emerged to either win the Cup or come very close. In every case, a confluence of hot goaltenders, inspired team play and a bucketful of luck came together to help forge these storybook tales.

No doubt that will happen again during the coming postseason. Some team will come out of the shadows like a bolt from the blue and make a valiant run to try to capture hockey’s Holy Grail. The question remains: Which team will that be this year?

Regardless of the pitfalls that are inherent in making predictions, I boldly forge ahead. Call me crazy.

Prediction No. 1: The New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings will be the only two Original Six teams to make the playoffs. Toronto can’t keep the puck out of their own net, Montreal has goaltending problems, Boston is alarmingly inconsistent and Chicago is just plain terrible. I long for the day when all six make the playoffs, and there’s a Chicago-Montreal final. So does the NHL, by the way.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: NHL | Stanley Cup | Anaheim | Detroit Red Wings | Vancouver Canucks | Roberto Luongo | Bruce Bennett

Prediction No. 2: The Vancouver Canucks will prevail in the Western Conference and go to the Stanley Cup final. Most pundits feel the Nashville Predators, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks or even the Dallas Stars are the best team, but the Canucks have momentum and, finally, a world-class goaltender in Roberto Luongo to help them go the distance. They’ve been among the best teams since Christmas, and they have great team chemistry and confidence. Those are winning ingredients for the postseason.

Prediction No. 3: The Pittsburgh Penguins will defy the experts and win at least two rounds in the playoffs. The Pens will garner 100 points this season, and are well-rounded and just giddy enough about their nascent rise in the league to surprise a couple of early playoff opponents. They will not have the depth, experience or wherewithal to go all the way, however. That is for another day, but it’s coming soon.

Prediction No. 4: The Tampa Bay Lightning will have a long playoff run. Most experts like Buffalo, Ottawa or New Jersey to come out of the Eastern Conference, but the Lightning have the offensive firepower and the advantage of flying under the radar on their side. They should last at least two rounds, if not more. And don’t be totally shocked if they make it all the way to the final.

Prediction No. 5: The Detroit Red Wings will once again lose their first-round series. It’s unlikely that they’ll finish first in their division or the conference, so they’ll get a terrible first-round draw, like Vancouver, San Jose or Dallas. That’ll spell doom for the Wings, who can’t match up offensively or in the speed and toughness departments with those potential foes. Ken Holland and his team are going to have to do some serious soul-searching over the summer, because this pattern of having superlative regular seasons, followed by astonishing first-round losses, is getting old in a hurry.

Prediction No. 6: The Carolina Hurricanes are toast. As much as I like this team and admired their players and front office, they’ll never be able to run through Tampa Bay, Ottawa, New Jersey or Buffalo. They’ll lose in a very early round.

Prediction No. 7: The Nashville Predators will not win the Stanley Cup this year. I know this comes as a great surprise to the Nashville faithful, who are already queuing up to buy their finals tickets, but they will eventually be vanquished by a more talented team, like Vancouver, Anaheim or Dallas. Get over it; you have a great team who will be in the chase for years to come. This just isn’t the year.

Prediction No. 8: The Atlanta Thrashers will win at least one playoff round, in their first year in the postseason. This team is too talented to roll over after it’s worked so hard to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Even if they do lose in the first round, their great season will go a long way toward solidifying their fan base and making this team a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Prediction No. 9: The San Jose Sharks will go deeper into the playoffs than their geographical foes, the Anaheim Ducks. Even though the Ducks have had a better overall regular season, the Sharks are better defensively, and that’s what really makes a difference in the post-season.

Prediction No. 10: The Calgary Flames will make some noise in the playoffs, but will ultimately fall because they have trouble winning on the road. The Flames are a scary first-round opponent, though. They have some significant talent on the blueline and in goal, so they cannot be taken for granted. And, the way they’ve pulled away from the Colorado Avalanche in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference has been impressive.
